Queenstown fire crews fight Friday night gondola tree fire

by Peter Newport - Mar 23, 2024

Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews fought a blaze last night in forest near the gondola above the Queenstown town centre.

Crews were first alerted to the fire in trees on the steep slope just after 10pm on Friday, March 22.

An update from FENZ just after midnight (March 23) says that "crews have reached the fire in trees near the gondola in Queenstown and are working to extinguish it".

FENZ reported the fire under control just after 1am.

Ziptrek Ecotours that operates near the gondola asked for information via social media about the fire.

One comment says the fire appeared to be under control and praised the work of Queenstown's volunteer firefighters.
