by Peter Newport - Mar 23, 2024

A Lake Hayes Estate resident has shared video from her home security system that shows the strength of last night's 5.6 magnitude earthquake that was centred 35 kms north of Milford Sound.

Luana Goncalves has lived in Queenstown for 15 years and was asleep at the time of the quake. She was with her young son as her husband and elder son were both on a visit to Christchurch.

Luana's video shows strong shaking that lasts around 20 - 30 seconds. The faces in the video have been blurred at Luana's request.

Geonet has published details of how many people felt last night's quake with a total of 1,559 people logging onto the site with a report.

Each orange or red square indicates a report of the earthquake (upper left circle on the map) being felt in Queenstown, Wānaka and Cromwell.

99 people reported experiencing the quake as moderate. Source Geonet.

Geonet reported an earthquake just 24 hours earlier in almost exactly the same location and depth but at a magnitude of 3.7.

Details of the Thursday March 21 earthquake from Geonet.
